Jamaica Beach is one of the most popular beaches and sought after neighborhoods when it comes to vacation rentals – what it lacks in size, it makes up for action during the summer months, holidays and event weekends!

Jamaica Beach offers the best of both worlds – beachfront and bayfront homes, and everything in between – beachside, canal front and dry lots. Jamaica Beach is far enough out to be away from the hustle and bustle of Seawall (8 miles), and but not too far away from most of the island attractions (10 miles from 61st Street).

Jamaica Beach also has it’s own community pool* and private marina and boat ramp, Regatta Basin,** a community pavilion*** and park.

Jamaica Beach is located on Galveston Island’s West End, and is surrounded by the city of Galveston to its East and West, but Jamaica Beach has been its own city since 1975. Jamaica Beach takes pride in this, with its own fire department, police department, city hall and city ordinances, separate from the City of Galveston.

Jamaica Beach borders the West side of the Galveston Island State Park, which is 1,921-acres and spans the width of Galveston Island with four distinct ecological zones: salt marsh, coastal prairie, sand dunes and maritime wetlands and sandy beach. The State Park offers swimming on its two miles of beaches, fishing, picnicking, bird watching, four miles of nature trails to hike or mountain bike, kayaking and geocaching. Visit the State Park nature center to learn more about the park and the programs offered. Also, the State Park was at one time, the home for the Mary Moody Northen Amphitheater, a 1,700-seat theater, built by the Lone Star Historical Drama Association, but was closed in the ’90s.

For history buffs, check out the historic marker “Karankawa Campsite” plaque at Jamaica Beach City Park, on the Southeast corner of Bob Smith and Jolly Rodger. The Karankawa were Indigenous people, concentrated in southern Texas along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Karankawa fought with the Spanish, French and English, served in the Mexican Army, were known for their skill in the art of wrestling and one of the only tribes known to keep dogs.

Jamaica Beach offers a few restaurants: Way West Grill & Pizzeria, Shrimp and Stuff food truck and Subway, and a couple of convenience stores: Jamaica Beach Food Store, Circle K and just down the road past Jamaica Beach is a Chevron. Jamaica Beach is just past Waterman’s and Nate’s Westend Seafood & Steaks is just a little further West. Next to Chevron, is Seven Seas Market. They have just about everything the larger chain grocery stores carry, plus a great little deli!

If you don’t find everything you need in Jamaica Beach, but don’t feel like heading back into town, the Dollar General, located outside Pirates Beach West, is a beach vacation guest’s dream. They not only offer great prices, but this Dollar General’s inventory is catered to our West End guests!

NOTES

*Jamaica Beach pool passes are $5 per person per day for anyone six and over and must be purchased directly from the Jamaica Beach Community Park Pool. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the State’s social distancing regulations, the pool will be operating with limitations. The pool will be open Tuesday-Sunday from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm (weather permitting) and at a maximum capacity of 50%, which equates to 38 patrons at any one time. A temporal scan will be taken of all patrons and must read equal to or lower than 100°. All patrons must sign a waiver, and pool deck furniture will not be put out. Patrons may bring their own chairs. Beverages or snacks will not be sold this year to minimize cash handling, and patrons will be allowed to carry in drinks, but no food, snacks, alcohol or glass will be allowed in the pool area.

**Marina boat launch access is $10 per day and must be purchased in person from the Jamaica Beach City Hall during office hours with a completed Marina Boat Ramp & Parking Permit Application.
