JAMAICA BEACH CURRENT AMENITY LIMITATIONS
09/02/2020 – Jamaica Beach’s Facebook page: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jamaica Beach public swimming pool is closed for the remainder of the 2020 Season. The pool will NOT be open during Labor Day weekend.
The City of Jamaica Beach has closed off the use of the City Park pavilion and equipment as another measure to reduce the spread of the very contagious coronavirus. The open spaces of the City Park will remain open, provided the social distancing requirements are being followed.
Jamaica Beach is one of the most popular beaches and sought after neighborhoods when it comes to vacation rentals – what it lacks in size, it makes up for in action during the summer months, holidays and event weekends!
Jamaica Beach offers a public community pool,* private boat ramp (Regatta Basin),** a community pavilion and a neighborhood park. It’s is located on Galveston Island’s West End, and is surrounded by the city of Galveston to its East and West, but has been its own city since 1975. This beach town takes pride in this, with its own fire department, police department, city hall and city ordinances, separate from the City of Galveston.
This city inside a city offers the best of both worlds – beachfront and bayfront homes, and everything in between – beachside, canal front and dry lots. Jamaica Beach is far enough out to be away from the hustle and bustle of Seawall (8 miles), and not too far away from most of the island attractions (10 miles from 61st Street).
*Jamaica Beach pool passes are $5 per person per day for anyone six and over and must be purchased directly from the Jamaica Beach Community Park Pool.
**Marina boat launch access is $10 per day. If interested in purchasing a Jamaica Beach boat launch pass, please contact Ryson in advance.
Things to Do when Staying in Jamaica Beach
If you have your own golf cart, be sure to bring it. You’ll be glad you did! If not, contact Gulf Coast Concierge to reserve your golf cart rental for your stay. Delivery and pickup are included.
Jamaica Beach borders the West side of the Galveston Island State Park, which is 1,921-acres and spans the width of Galveston Island with four distinct ecological zones: salt marsh, coastal prairie, sand dunes and maritime wetlands and sandy beach. The State Park offers swimming on its two miles of beaches, fishing, picnicking, bird watching, four miles of nature trails to hike or mountain bike, kayaking and geocaching. Visit the State Park nature center to learn more about the park and the programs offered. Also, the State Park was at one time, the home for the Mary Moody Northen Amphitheater, a 1,700-seat theater, built by the Lone Star Historical Drama Association, but was closed in the ’90s.
For history buffs, check out the historic marker “Karankawa Campsite” plaque at Jamaica Beach City Park, on the Southeast corner of Bob Smith and Jolly Rodger. The Karankawa were Indigenous people, concentrated in southern Texas along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Karankawa fought with the Spanish, French and English, served in the Mexican Army, were known for their skill in the art of wrestling and one of the only tribes known to keep dogs.
Looking for a meal you don’t have to prepare yourself?
