Galveston Railroad Museum

Galveston, Texas is a city that often brings to mind surf, sand and sun. This coastal oasis of relaxation and fun is a place that draws visitors in as they seek the waves and water. However, the city has a knack for railways as well. Dedicated to the preservation of their very rich history, Galveston keeps a close eye on its historical railways by giving the public access to the Galveston Railroad museum. Come for a look around at the amazing exhibits and stay for a ride. Whatever you choose to do, it’s sure to be a fun day for the entire family!

Permanent Exhibits

The Galveston Railroad Museum takes visitors on a journey through time by highlighting advances in railroad travel through the decades. Hosting several permanent exhibits, guest can enjoy a close look at two F-7 locomotives referred to as Santa Fe Warbonnets originally built by General Motors in 1953. Continuing on, visitors will make their way through the People’s Gallery where they will witness an arrangement of life-size statues depicting railroad passengers of the 1930’s. This unique gallery gives guests a sense of what the depot was like during its golden era and how rail travel has transformed through time.

For those interested in the intricate details of freight cars, exhibits are designed to offer a closeup look at both flat cars and tanks including the evolution of connection techniques. The Gallery of Rail History provides an interactive timeline taking visitors between railroads of the 1830’s well into the 20th century. With an outdoor exhibit known as The Garden of Steam and a gallery dedicated to model trains, there’s something for everyone when a day is spent at the railroad museum.
