How does this sound for the start of an extended, relaxing stay in Galveston? A little music and a glass of wine in a gorgeous garden setting of an incredible museum. This ambiance is what you’ll experience during Thursdays at The Bryan Museum. Every Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., The Bryan Museum invites you to enjoy their gardens while you listen to local musicians, browse their gift shop, shop in the Farmer’s Market, and enjoy a selection of wines.
The Bryan Museum treats Franciscan-level members of the museum to their first glass of wine. Non-members of the museum can purchase wine by the glass. While you’re there, make sure to make a reservation for a museum tour led by one of their knowledgeable docents. I highly recommend taking a tour with a museum docent. There’s so much to see, and it’s easy to miss that hidden treasure.
If the weather isn’t cooperative, you’ll be able to enjoy music and wine in their gorgeous conservatory, which opens onto their stone patio. Thursdays at The Bryan is a perfect way to kick off your Thursday evening before your dinner out.
Here’s a little background on the building. It was originally the Galveston Orphans Home. The 1900 Storm severely damaged the 1895 building. Later that same year, William Randolph Hearst, the famous newspaper publisher, sponsored a charity event in New York City to raise funds for the home. He raised $50,000, which was enough to rebuild the Galveston Orphans Home. Famous guests included Samuel Clemens (better known as Mark Twain), Mrs. John Astor, and the Texas Governor, Joseph D. Sayers.
This building served as an orphanage until 1984. For several years, Ross Dinyari owned the building and spent over a million dollars restoring it. In 2013, J.P. Bryan purchased the building and began a massive restoration to convert it into a museum.
Now, The Bryan Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to the Southwestern United States. If you cannot take a tour during Thursdays at The Bryan, make sure you come back.
