Memorial Day Weekend 2020

Memorial Day is this coming Monday, the 25th, and it is fast approaching. Although Memorial Day in Galveston might be celebrated a little different this year, there are still plenty of traditional activities you and your family can do in Galveston on this remembrance day and weekend.

There are more than enough outdoor activities to take part in this weekend and Memorial Day in Galveston, with many locations offering plenty of space to be able to distance your family from others. All beaches in Galveston will remain open during this weekend, which means leisurely volleyball, football, barbecuing, sunbathing, and more can still be enjoyed with family in the sand. Have a cookout on the beach or at your vacation house to refuel for swimming. Don’t forget the sunscreen though!

During this time, Galveston Island State Park is open for day visits and limited camping. Enjoy the views, birds, and other wildlife while hiking the trails, biking, or fishing. If you are a fan of fishing, many fishing piers on the island will also be open this weekend and there is no shortage of fish to be caught!

Rent a golf cart, bicycle, Segway, or bring your own if you have one. The Seawall spans a large section of the island and has many sites to see on a relaxing stroll, no matter your mode of transportation. Pleasure Pier is the world famous destination located on the Seawall. Although the rides are not open at this time, they are offering free walk-ons so you can enjoy the view of the Gulf of Mexico.

Some of Galveston’s most historic locations will be open this weekend for you to enjoy and learn a little history. The beautiful 4-story historic landmark built in 1895, Moody Mansion, is open with limited hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In addition, Galveston’s famous Bryan Museum will be open Wednesday through Sunday and will also be hosting a live virtual event on Friday for all to enjoy.

During this time, most restaurants are slowly and carefully starting to open up more. Many offer take-out and delivery only, some offer dine-in with limited capacity, others with outside sit-down dining. The fact is, depending on what cuisine you would like to eat this weekend and from what establishment, you may be enjoying it in restaurant, on the beach, in your luxurious vacation rental, or elsewhere. Where ever you end up, there are many options of delicious eateries on the island to try.

Don’t let the uncertainty take away from experiencing new and incredible food or having a great time this weekend!

Some Memorial Day events may have been canceled and some locations closed, but there’s still a lot to enjoy and so much to do. One thing we all should be doing is remembering why we celebrate Memorial Day in the first place. This is a time to honor our military that have died while serving this country. Even though we are going through difficult times right now, we can all still take time to recognize those that gave everything for the rest of us to be able to enjoy all the great things this country has to offer.
